Marine Shipping Insurance:

"What you should know about Marine Insurance"

This might be the most problematic and misunderstood part of any contract. One of the more frequently asked questions is: Why do I need marine insurance? There is no easy explanation to this other than, during oceanfreight transportation; contents are out of direct control on any freight forwarder. Carriers are protected and have a limited liability while transporting your cargo.

To protect your cargo against physical loss or damage in transit, you must insure it. You cannot rely upon the transportation companies to pay for losses, because all carriers limit their liability. To protect your shipment for its full value you must insure it. (However, no insurance covers everything. No insurance covers nor is there any carrier liability for delay, loss of market, or any kind of consequential loss, among others.)

If you have your own cargo insurance, please be sure that this shipment is reported to your insurer.

If the buyer or consignee will insure, please be sure that the insurance is in place before shipment starts.

If you need insurance, we can insure the shipment for you if you ask for it. INSURANCE IS NOT AUTOMATIC, YOU MUST REQUEST IT. You should insure for the full value, plus all freight charges. Adding 10% more is optional. If you do not insure for the full value (including freight to destination), and if there is a claim, the insurance company will reduce the claim by the percentage that the shipment is under insured.

If you refuse insurance, the shipment travels at your risk. You will NOT be able to recover the full value of any transit loss from us or any other carrier because of limitations of liability provided by law and by contract. In addition, certain events may occur while your cargo is in transit (such as a general average on a vessel) which may require the posting of a cash deposit before cargo is released and which will be your responsibility.
